Intro
Today I want to share some thoughts on responsibility, art, and culture. This episode is a follow-up to one of my earlier talks where I spoke about responsibility in dance roles, like leading and following. This time, I’m taking it a step further. I want to talk about art, culture, and how they connect to who we are. I also want to share why I believe we all carry a responsibility to keep those things alive through our actions.

I came across a quote that says, “Earth without art is just eh.” It made me laugh but also made me think. Art gives life meaning. It is part of our identity. It’s not only about painting or music. It’s in the way our families cook, the way we talk, our accents, and the way we move. These things make us who we are, and we have a duty to carry them forward. - Culture Must Be Protected
Winston Churchill once said during the war, when people suggested cutting art funding, “Then what are we fighting for?” That idea shows how important culture is. Without art, there’s no real spirit behind a country. Our art—our dances, our food, our language—is what makes us Cuban, Colombian, American, or anything else. It’s how we express ourselves, and it deserves protection. - Women and Expression
I believe women often feel a stronger pull to express themselves. Dance gives them a way to release feelings stored in the body. Talking with someone you trust can do that too, but it’s not always easy. Dance gives that release. Moving the body is healing. I see it as not only fun but also necessary for many. - Every Dance Represents a Culture
When we dance, we represent more than just ourselves. Salsa, bachata, belly dance, Irish dance—they all carry stories of a culture. By dancing, we become carriers of history and tradition. We show the world a piece of that identity. That’s a big responsibility. - My Own Journey
Even though my name is Andres Fernandez and I’m a salsa instructor, I didn’t grow up very connected to Spanish culture. My Cuban students were actually teaching me Spanish. But once I started learning and living the culture, I felt a duty to carry it forward. I admired the Cuban pride and how strong it is. In Miami, that pride shows in salsa. In bachata, we see the Dominican pride shining through. Each dance keeps its culture alive. - You Are Contributing Too
If you’re dancing, taking classes, or even supporting by watching, you are contributing. Your time, energy, and even money all help culture move forward. You’re not just having fun—you’re playing a part in keeping art and culture alive for the next generation. That’s something to feel proud of. - Food, Dance, and Joy
Culture is not only in dance. It’s also in food. I’m a foodie myself, and just like with meals, dance brings joy when we share it with others. Whether we are cooking or dancing, we are celebrating culture and giving life more color.
Closing Thoughts
In this episode, I wanted to remind you that what you do matters. Every time you step on the dance floor, cook a family meal, or speak in your own way, you are carrying culture forward. You’re giving others a chance to see the beauty of your identity and also inspiring them to do the same. That is responsibility. That is art. That is life.
