Nobody likes to be misunderstood, but it happens all the time even with words. Is it any wonder that we can be misunderstood when it comes to dance and to our passion? How do make sure that there aren’t misunderstandings and that we’re communicating our desires properly? There is a myth behind misunderstandings that Andres calls ‘static’. Static is a symbol of miscommunication. It’s not that there’s nothing there, it’s that the signal isn’t getting through properly or strongly enough. Something one on or both sides of the transmission isn’t getting through properly. This means you have to adjust something. With an old tv it was the antenna. With dance, it’s your attitude and your ways of communication. Your goal is to get the signals in sync.
Miscommunication and misunderstandings are normal parts of life and the best thing you can do is allow yourself to go through the process and let it happen so that you can be a better dance partner. It’s important for you both to be comfortable and communicate to be able to dance your best and you need to be able to accept this as part of the process.
Andres shares attitudes and strategies on how to address miscommunication and how to address it properly. Keep in mind that rather than beijing angry at either your partner for ‘not getting it’ or at yourself for not being able to communicate, just remember that this is something that is needed for the process of dance to be its best.
“In my experience, the biggest hurdle or challenge for all of my students that’s preventing them from seeing fast results is the notion that they are or have messed up. They have their timing perfectly, then the moment that they miss the tiny silly little detail, they mess up. They drop their connection. … Our ability to get past this specific hurdle alone, this miscommunication normality will literally guarantee results for you.”
