On this episode, Andres talks about self-awareness and knowing who you are. Who are you? There is nothing more fun or effortless than being yourself, so the best way to have a blast on the dance floor is to do that. Too many dancers try too hard to emulate other dancers, try to copy their heroes rather than excel at that. You’ll never be better at being someone else than they already are, but nobody is going to be as good at being you as you are. The biggest way to be the best at dancing is to make it easier, to make it feel more natural. That’s best accomplished by being able to feel comfortable in your own skin. You’ll also have more fun by not being so self-conscious.

Asking who you are is more than something as superficial as your name or your age or place of birth. It’s about your responses, your behavior, the conditions that affect how you think. To be yourself, you need that self-awareness, to know who you are beyond the basics. By knowing what makes you tick and how to best take advantage of that, you can be yourself on the dance floor and have the most fun. Part of this is realizing the uniqueness that is you. You may not feel special or important but you are absolutely a unique creature made of your own experiences, circumstances and choices. Realizing these is what will help you know yourself.

Dance is of course a form of self-expression, which is why knowing yourself is so good. Just as you express yourself through dance, you also explore yourself through dance. Looking at how you pull off techniques, your rhythm, the energy you have in a dance, these are all things that you can learn about yourself, letting you know yourself and letting you succeed through dance.By finding out who you are, not only will your dance improve but also your self-awareness, understanding, and happiness.

“When you’ve been doing this for fifteen years, you come to realize that the way people express themselves in their dance, in their movements, in their actions, in the way that they brush their teeth, how you do one thing is how you do everything.”
